Blood and Bone is the greatest martial arts movie I’ve seen in a long time.

And there’s one simple reason why it’s so great:

Martial artists made the movie.

Not a bunch of fat execs, sitting around looking at trends and making a movie mad-libs style, filling in the blanks with Wushu and Capoeira moves.

The director practices martial arts, the producer practices martial arts and many of the actors are professional stunt performers or fighters. Hell, the Grip was probably spinning lights and mics like nunchucks.

chocolate-posterPrachya Pinkaew serves up another Thai powerhouse in Chocolate (not to be confused with Chocolat, starring Johnny Depp…), starring JeeJa Yanin as Zen, an autistic girl with a knack for cracking people’s heads the way Rainman counts cards.

The movie reminded me slightly of Unleashed, as Zen is harmless until certain triggers send her into an acrobatic, kicking frenzy. JeeJa Yanin showed her character’s autism well, being fairly accurate while being respectful of those with the condition.

Redbelt – Movie Review

In Redbelt, a Jiu-Jitsu instructor (Chiwetel Ejiofor – Children of Men, Serenity) struggles to keep control of his life, when others try to change his philosophy for their own gain. Will he keep his honour, or give in to the people he tries to help?
