Hidden Martial Arts in Movies

For today’s post, I thought it would be fun to highlight a few movies I’ve come across recently that had unexpected martial arts. Just a head’s up, this post includes spoilers. The movies I’ll be checking out are:

Martial Arts in Alpha Dog

post movie poster alpha dogBen Foster plays a meth-head that also happens to be a Taekwondo blackbelt. When his brother is kidnapped, he crashes a party and kicks the snot out of everybody for information.

There are a lot of people out there who love to go on about how Taekwondo wouldn’t work in real life. Well, looks like they’ve never been kicked in the face.

Today’s lesson: if someone’s pupils are the size of dinner plates, don’t let him kick you.

Taylor Lautner in Sharkboy and Lavagirl

post movie poster sharkboy and lavagirlSharkboy and Lavagirl is a crappy movie. Let’s just get that out of the way.

But, I have two daughters and it’s 3-D, so I own it.

Moving on.

Taylor Lautner (currently the next big thing in teen girl screamery) got casted when they found him at a martial arts tournament, where he blew up the forms competition. They decided to put in a scene where he beat up some CGI monsters.

I’m assuming they just let him do his thing and added them in the right places afterward.

Keep an eye out for this kid in Twilight: New Moon (again, if you have daughters, you’re required to know this).

Capoeira in Ocean’s Twelve

post movie poster oceans twelveOcean’s Twelve is a decent heist movie.

What you might not know is that Vincent Cassel, like his character in the movie, is big into Capoeira. Vincent Cassel’s passion for Capoeira in real life lead to this scene, a tribute to Catherine Zeta Jones‘ laser scene in Entrapment:

Cabin Fever’s Pancakes

post movie poster cabin feverHere is perhaps the most random (i.e. unnecessary) pseudo fight-scene in a movie.

This kid was an extra, who was seen practicing Taekwondo during a break. The result: Pancakes. A scene where an inbred kid missing his banjo flips out, throws some TKD kicks around, and bites a stoner.

Enjoy.

Name some more movies!

I hope you enjoyed this little roundup. I challenge you readers out there to come up with any other unexpected or random martial arts in movies. Post them in the comments, they might make it to the next Roundup!
